The Faith Community nurse role is a health-promotion, risk-reduction, disease-prevention position that focuses on care of the whole person, holding the spiritual dimensions to be central to the practice.
This program, originally offered by Samford University in Birmingham for more than 20 years, was recently adopted by the staff at SCCHC as a focused program. By educating nurses in providing holistic care to communities of faith, the clinic meets an important need for residents of Alabama.
Debbie Duke formerly ran the program at Samford University and now serves as coordinator for the Faith Community Nursing Program at St. Clair Community Health Clinic. The course and its refresher programs have helped train more than 1000 individuals since it began in 1999.
